gmat exam pattern

As the table above suggests, the GMAT exam pattern comprises of the following four section, and the candidates are judged on the basis of their skills in those sections:

  • Analytical Writing Assessment (AWA): The AWA section of the GMAT test requires the candidates to write an essay on the given topic. The candidates will be asked to do the analysis of an argument provided to them, and construct an essay in either favor of or against the argument. This section is 30 minutes long, which means, the candidates are required to complete the analysis and writing essay within 30 minutes.
  • Integrated Reasoning (IR): The IR section of the GMAT test requires the candidates to answer 12 questions, which are present in four different formats. 30 minutes of time is allotted to the students to complete this section. The format in which the questions are asked in this section are as follows:
  • The Two-part Analysis type of questions have tables attached to them and they ask you to choose two correct answers from a choice of five or six.
  • The Multi-Source Reasoning type of questions present information on three individual tabs, and on the basis of the information the candidates may be asked critical reasoning type questions and sometimes quantitative reasoning too.
  • The Graphic Interpretation type of questions present a graph or chart. The candidates are required to analyze the important information out of the graph, and answer two questions with multiple-choice answers.
  • The Table Analysis type of questions present a sortable table along with three questions (two choice answers)
  • Quantitative Section: A total of 37 questions are asked in the quantitative section of the GMAT test. The candidates are allotted a time of 75 minutes to complete this section. The questions belong to different mathematics sections, like Arithmetic, Algebra, and Geometry. Out of the 37 questions asked, approximately 33 questions are scored and the rest questions are being tested for future use. The GMAT Scoring System

GMAT Score – How the scoring system really works?

gmat test score

Your final GMAT score considers only your GMAT Quantitative Math and GMAT Verbal scores, which ranges from 200 to 800. Your Analytical Writing Assessment and Integrated Reasoning scores do not affect the final score. This explains why students need to devote most of their time on the first two sections during their GMAT test preparation. However, it is important to get good grades in the other two sections as well.

Check out the features of the GMAT scoring system:

  • Your GMAT Score Report includes the test scores from all the tests that you have taken in the last five years.
  • In your GMAT score report, you will be provided with a scaled score (for example, scale score for verbal section ranges from 0-60) and the corresponding percentile rank (0-99%) for each section. The GMAT scaled score is obtained by calculating the number of correct answers in the section, along with the number of questions attempted and the difficulty level of the questions.
  • Your GMAT Score Percentiles or Percentile Rank: It lists the percent of test takers who scored lower than you. Example: A 92nd percentile means you fared better than 92 per cent of people who took the GMAT exam. The GMAT score percentile rank is based on the scores of everyone who took the test in the last three years – which is why it will be a dynamic figure and keeps changing depending on the universe of test takers.
  • The Quantitative Section counts for the final grade and is adaptive. This means if your answer is correct, the test adapts itself and increases the degree of difficulty in the subsequent questions. And if your answer is incorrect, it reduces the degree of difficulty and makes it easier for you. Keep in mind that the scores change in both cases. Scores range from 0 to 60, with intervals of 1. Needless to emphasize, you need to score maximum points in this section of a higher Total score.
  • The Verbal Section is the next most important section. This section is identical to the Quantitative section, is also adaptive, and has a score range from 0 to 60 with intervals of 1. And the more you score in this section, the more your Total score will be.
  • Analytical Writing Assessment: This is the Essay section, with scores from 0.0 to 6.0, in increments of 0.5. As mentioned before, this score does not impact your GMAT Total score.
  • Integrated Reasoning: Score ranges from 1 to 8 in this section with intervals of 1. This score, again, does not reflect in your GMAT Test score.
  • All of these GMAT score ranges are just the scaled scores. The scaled scores are further converted into the final score range of 200-800, using an equation of the scaled score and the percentile score that are provided in the GMAT Score Report. The table given below can help you find an estimate of your final score range of the verbal and quantitative sections, by using your scaled scores and percentile scores for the concerned sections. The table may not provide you the most accurate score, but you can use it to find your probable scores.
  • While the GMAT test’s Total score ranges in between 200 and 800 points, the average GMAT score is 554.

Students often tend to be curious about the question-

What Are Good GMAT Scores?

Just to keep you up to date, average GMAT test scores of the recent candidates who aced admission into some of the top MBA schools across the US, oscillates in between 680 and 720. While higher scores are always better, a score of at least 600 puts you in the top one-third percentile as far as the GMAT MBA world is concerned. And a score of 680 should ensure a berth for you in a top graduate school. However, it is utmost important for you to find out the range of GMAT test scores in your desired b-school, and work hard towards achieving the score.

How to use the GMAT Score Chart to find your final GMAT score?

The following example will help you understand how you can efficiently use the above charts. For example, a candidate has scored 43 (89%) in the verbal section and 40 (72%) in the quantitative section of the GMAT test. Then,

GMAT Verbal score = 680 & GMAT Quantitative Score = 590.
The final GMAT score is the average of both the scores, that is (680+590)/2, which comes to be near 640.
According to the charts, the 640 score would be in a 90th percentile.
